Hollyhill Pinkie is a more recent introduction, also from Ted and Margaret Kennedy (Hollyhill Dahlias) in the USA, introduced in 2021.
Characteristics:
Form: Pompon (P) or Ball (BA). Most sources classify the 'Hollyhill Pink Pearl' as a Pompon or a very small Ball dahlia. This means the bloom is perfectly spherical, with tightly rolled, involute petals that create a dense, resilient flower structure.
Color: Pink (PK) / Blush / Ivory Blend. The color is delicate and highly prized:
- It is described as a creamy blush or soft pink, often with an iridescent or pearlescent glow—hence the name.
- It ranges from ivory at the base to a true blush pink on the outer petals.
- It’s a top choice for those seeking a true blush, ballerina pink color that resembles the highly popular, but larger, 'Café au Lait'.
Bloom Size: 4-5 inch Ball
Height: A sturdy, productive plant that grows to approximately 3 to 4 feet (90–120 cm) tall.
Performance:
- Cut Flower Quality: This is an excellent, prolific cut flower. Its size and density make it a superb filler or accent flower in bouquets. It is known for producing an abundance of blooms on strong, resilient stems, making it a reliable workhorse for market growers.
- Vase Life: The Pompon/Ball form ensures it has an outstanding vase life, often one of the best among dahlias, holding its shape and color well for many days.
- Garden Use: Its perfect spherical shape and soft color add a touch of formality and elegance to the garden. Its smaller bloom size makes it less prone to heavy wind damage than large dinnerplates, and its high production rate keeps the color coming all season long.
