Terracotta is a striking variety known for its warm, earthy coloring and prolific, spikey blooms, making it a highly desirable cut flower. Origin unknown.

Characteristics:

Form:  Semi-Cactus (SC): The petals (ray florets) are broad at the base and become rolled or revolute for approximately half their length. This gives the flower a dense, slightly shaggy, and "spiky" appearance, providing excellent texture in arrangements. Some growers also describe the form as a Cactus.

Colour:

  • Bronze (BR): Officially classified as Bronze, the color is its most notable feature.
  • Color Palette: The blooms are a rich, complex mix of warm, earthy tones, most frequently described as terracotta, warm amber, butterscotch, peachy-brown, or soft orange. The color is generally uniform and deep, providing a stunning, saturated hue in the garden and bouquet.

Bloom Size: Small (BB): The blooms are a medium size, measuring approximately 4 to 6 inches ( cm to cm) in diameter. In trade, it is often listed with a to inch bloom size.

Plant Height: Tall: 'Terracotta' is known for being a particularly vigorous grower, with plants reaching heights of 4 to 6 feet ( m to m).

Performance:

  • Exceptional Vigor and Productivity: This is one of the most highly praised traits of 'Terracotta'. It is known to be an extremely vigorous grower and a prolific bloomer, continuously producing flowers throughout the season.
  • Stems: The variety produces long, strong stems that hold the sizable blooms upright, making it an excellent and reliable cut flower.
  • Cut Flower Use: A favorite among cut flower farmers and florists for its unique, sought-after color and texture that blends beautifully with many palettes, particularly those requiring warm, rust-colored accents.
  • Tuber Production: Noted for being a very good to top-tier tuber producer.
  • Special Note: The variety is often cited as a "found seedling" or "of unknown origin," which is common in the dahlia trade, and was famously shared among growers for its outstanding performance.
