Senior’s Hope Dahlia was introduced by J. J. Vleut (Netherlands), Introduced in 2016.
Characteristics:
Form: Informal Decorative (ID) or Decorative (D) — Features lush, fully double blooms with a somewhat relaxed, ruffled petal arrangement.
Color: Dark Blend (DB) — A captivating and complex mix, typically described as dusky rose, silvery mauve, smokey raspberry, or muted purple on the top of the petals, with a contrasting rich plum, burgundy, or wine-red reverse (backside) and dark centers. This gives it a beautiful, painterly, ombré effect.
Bloom Size: Miniature to Small (M/BB) — Generally measures 3 to 5 inches (approx. 7.5–12 cm) in diameter, which is a perfect size for mixed bouquets.
Height: Medium — Tends to be a more compact plant, typically reaching 3 to 4 feet (approx. 0.9–1.2 meters) tall.
Performance:
- Often has dark, lightly bronzed, or rich deep green foliage, which provides a striking backdrop for the blooms.
- Bloom Time: Prolific bloomer from mid-summer until the first frost. It is often cited as being one of the first dahlias to bloom.
- Best harvested when three-quarters open for optimal vase life (up to 5 days).
- Best Use: Excellent cut flower with a long vase life, perfect for borders, cottage gardens, and containers due to its slightly more compact height.
